    From Vision to Reality

    broken image

    Foundation of Our Mission

The Disabilities Rehabilitation Center was established in response to the growing needs of individuals with disabilities in Gaza Camp. Recognizing the lack of support services, a group of dedicated community members came together to create a center that would facilitate rehabilitation and integration. This grassroots initiative laid the foundation for what has become a vital resource for families and individuals facing various disabilities.

    Community Engagement

Over the years, our center has successfully engaged with local communities, raising awareness about disability rights and inclusion. Through workshops, training programs, and outreach initiatives, we have fostered a supportive environment where families can share experiences and access essential resources. This commitment to community engagement has been key to our evolution and impact.

    Here the story

The Community Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities is located in Jerash Camp / Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan / Jerash Governorate, approximately ten kilometers from the city of Jerash. It falls within the boundaries of Al-Mu'arad municipality. According to the records of the United Nations Relief and the Jordanian Statistical Department, the camp's population is about fifty thousands (50,000) living within an area of 787,000 square meters. The youth in the camp constitute 75% of the total population. The camp was established in 1967, and most of its residents are displaced persons and refugees from the Gaza Strip who do not hold a national number, thus losing their rights to be treated as Jordanian citizens in terms of health, education, work, and social development, as they are considered temporary refugees from Gaza.

The camp suffers from economic, health, and social development issues, as well as educational problems and deprivation from job opportunities and social development projects and funds. The unemployment rate in the camp is very high, estimated at 90% among residents of all age groups, due to discrimination between Jordanian citizens and temporary refugees, which increases the economic burdens on families and social problems in the camp. This is in addition to psychological issues and the multiple hardships of life since its establishment. Environmental problems, closely packed residential units roofed with zinco(sheet metal) and Asbestos( Cement and wooden sheet metal), the increasing number of family members and the small size of each residential unit (96 square meters) granted since established the camp in 1967 whom have exacerbated social and psychological problems within each family due to the growing family size over the years while the unit size remains constant.

Cousin marriage is a prominent feature of the community in the camp due to the displacement of entire families during the internal displacement process in 1948 into the Gaza Strip, followed by forced displacement to camps in Jordan. This intra-family marriage over the long term has led to the emergence of health and mental issues and various disabilities among all age groups, prompting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency to call on concerned countries to pay attention to the segment of persons with disabilities in Gaza Camp

The Community Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities in Gaza Camp operates under the name of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which is the legal authority as the center is located within one of the Palestinian refugee camps. The number of people with disabilities in the camp is 567 cases from all age groups. The center, according to its available capabilities, provides training and rehabilitation services to the maximum extent possible. The percentage of women among the cases is 51%.
